Kraft Foods has stooped to a new low to sell its powdered drink mix. While flipping through the October 2007 issue of Family Circle magazine I was shocked by a full page ad for Tang powdered beverage. The headline says “Fruitrition, Flavor, and Fun! All in One!”. Then there’s a huge cartoon can of Tang in the middle of a cartoon park setting and walking path. There’s a sign next to the can which very largely, and irresponsibly, says “Half the Sugar” and in small print it says half the sugar of 100% juice. NICE of them to prey on the ignorant parents who already feed their kids obesity causing and health depleting crap. Anyone with a diabetic family history will now think that it is healthier than OJ or other 100% juice and give this to their kids for breakfast. First of all, you can’t compare fructose (natural sugar from real fruit) and sucrose (good old fashioned sugar) for nutritional value. A glass of 100% juice is part of the “5-a-day” serving. It is GOOD for you as part of a healthy diet. Tang has the same ingredients as Kood-Aid plus some added vitamins. Tang is NOT good for ANY diet. Isn’t it about time that these large greedy corporations start taking some responsibility for the junk they package and list it as a “junk food” on the front of the label?
